Facts

Hassocks is thought to have been named after short tufts of grass found in local fields.

Routes

Whether you are hiring bikes or using your own, you can pick up a free cycle route map from Hassocks Community Cycle Hire. Each map details one of our circular routes that starts and finishes at Hassocks Station. Also available from local shops, stations and visitor attractions. Or download them from the following links:

Hassocks, Ditchling and Clayton (Approx 8 miles / 13 km)
Hassocks, Goddards Green, Twineham, Sayers Common, Hurstpierpoint (Approx 12 miles / 19.5km)
Hassocks, Westmeston, Streat, Plumpton, Ditchling (Approx 14.5 miles / 23 km)
Burgess Hill Green Route, Goddards Green, Hurstpierpoint College (Approx 8 miles / 13 km)
Ditchling and the top of the South Downs (Approx 10.5 miles / 17 km)

West Sussex County Council Cycling has information about cycling including a cycle journey planner and more cycling routes and maps.  Enter your start and end points, choose fastest, quietest or balanced route and the journey planner will give you turn by turn directions, a map and elevation profile (showing how hilly your route is) as well as distance and estimated journey time.

For example, the quiet route from Hassocks Station to Ditchling Beacon takes you off-road, past Jack and Jill Windmills and along the South Downs Way to The Beacon.

The Downs and Weald Cycle Path (part of National Cycle Route 20) passes close to Hassocks and links Brighton and Crawley. Parts of the route are off road and other sections are on roadServicing
