A mill has stood above Clayton, where Jill Mill now stands, since the 1760s.

Mountain Bike Hire

Hassocks Community Cycle Hire

Our Saracen Mantra bikes for hire

Hire mountain bikes at Hassocks Community Cycle Hire, a community enterprise led by volunteers who love bikes, with the twin aims of promoting cycling and environmental tourism in the Hassocks, Sussex, Brighton and South Downs area through mountain bike hire and serving the local community through the bike servicing side of our operation.

Our mountain bike hire and service centre is conveniently located in the grounds of The Hassocks Hotel, Station Approach East, Hassocks, BN6 8HN. This is directly outside the exit of Hassocks Railway Station on the southbound side (platform 2, towards Brighton). Near Brighton (10 mins), near London (50 mins), on the South Downs Way. We are perfectly placed on the London to Brighton train line for active days out from either city, or a day trip including all three locations.

Our high quality Saracen Mantra mountain bikes are available for hire all year round. We also have children’s bikes and family rates, making for a great fun family day out.

How it works:

To make a booking send us an email with your requirements and a contact number at visithassocksbikes@gmail.com or telephone 07521 961 909. We will arrange to meet you at our hire centre at an agreed time. We ask you to phone us about half an hour before you return the bikes to give us time to get up to the hut and open up. As this is an on demand service, we would appreciate it if you would inform us as soon as possible if you have a change of plan.

West Sussex County Council Cycling has information about cycling including a cycle journey planner and more cycling routes and maps.  Enter your start and end points, choose fastest, quietest or balanced route and the journey planner will give you turn by turn directions, a map and elevation profile (showing how hilly your route is) as well as distance and estimated journey time.

For example, the quiet route from Hassocks Station to Ditchling Beacon takes you off-road, past Jack and Jill Windmills and along the South Downs Way to The Beacon.

The Downs and Weald Cycle Path (part of National Cycle Route 20) passes close to Hassocks and links Brighton and Crawley. Parts of the route are off road and other sections are on road.

We offer a full range of servicing, from tweaking brakes and gears to a full strip-down. We sell spare parts (anything not in stock, we can order) and give friendly advice to cyclists of all types (Saturday morning shopper - Chris Hoy) on Saturday mornings.
